Murder Or Suicide? Police Recover Charred Body Of Medical Student From Ranchi Hostel

Ranchi: A charred body was recovered from the hostel premises of Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) here on Thursday.

Jharkhand police said that the body was of a second-year student of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (FMT) department.

A police patrolling team found the body at 5.30 am after receiving information from a person at RIMS.

The deceased student has been identified as a resident of Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore.

“The student was staying in room number 79 on the top floor of the hostel building. Following the recovery of the body, a dog squad and an FSL (Forensic Science Laboratory) team were pressed into service. We have collected the deceased’s mobile phone and sealed the room,” a Bariatu police station official said.

Ranchi senior superintendent of police Chandan Kumar Sinha informed that both suicide and murder angles are being investigated.

An FIR into the incident has not yet been registered as police are waiting for family members to arrive in Ranchi and give their statement.

“A formal FIR will be registered only when family members give their statement. We have begun our probe into two angles – suicide and homicide. We are waiting for a report from the FSL to proceed further in the matter,” Sinha said.

Sub-inspector Husnain Ansari was quoted as saying that a black oily substance like engine oil and footprints were found on the hostel’s roof.

However, no suicide note was recovered from the student’s room.

“Those staying in the hostel didn’t notice any unusual behaviour of the student whose body was recovered,” Ansari added.

According to a fellow student, the student attended class on Wednesday.

“If he was burning, he would have screamed but no one in the hostel heard his screams. Police should conduct a proper probe,” said the student.
