New Delhi: In a major step, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced the suspension of its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Turkey’s Inonu University in the aftermath of the India-Pakistan conflict.

Explaining its stance, JNU said in a post on X that the decision has been taken “due to national security considerations,” tagging several high offices and top government leaders.

“Due to National Security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inonu University, Türkiye stands suspended until further notice. JNU stands with the Nation. #NationFirst @rashtrapatibhvn @VPIndia @narendramodi @PMOIndia @AmitShah @DrSJaishankar @MEAIndia @EduMinOfIndia,” JNU tweeted sometime back.

India’s relations with Turkey deteriorated following the latter’s open support for Pakistan in the recent conflict between the neighbouring countries. After India conducted Operation Sindoor to destroy nine selected terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to avenge the dastardly Pahalgam attack of April 22, Pakistan hit back with drone attacks, targeting civilians, civilian infrastructure and religious places in the border states of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Turkey condemned India for Operation Sindoor, calling it “unprovoked aggression.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has repeatedly expressed solidarity with Pakistan, describing the victims of Indian military actions as “martyrs” and reinforcing Turkey’s commitment to Pakistan’s cause.

Pakistan used hundreds of Turkish drones in its attack on India, drawing strong criticism from New Delhi.

Indians have made their stand clear as well, with thousands cancelling trips to Turkey, which is a top tourist destination.
