New Delhi:  The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued an advisory that recommends testing on demand for COVID-19 for all individuals travelling to “other countries or Indian states, mandating a negative COVID-19 test at the point of entry”.

The states, however, can use their discretion to modify the approach, according to the fresh advisory.

The top medical body also advised that no emergency procedure, including deliveries, should be delayed for lack of test.

Moreover, new mothers, who test positive for the virus, are advised to wear a mask and frequently wash their hands while handling their babies for 14 days. They should also be advised on breast cleaning before feeding their babies.

These measures are likely to reduce transmission of the infection to their babies, the advisory said.

A single RT-PCR, TrueNat, CBNAAT, and the rapid antigen-positive test is to be considered confirmatory without any repeat testing. If any symptoms develop following a negative RAT test, a repeat RAT or RT-PCR is mandatory, the advisory added.

It also recommended that people residing in containment zones, especially in hotspot cities, must be tested by RAT.

The ICMR further advised home quarantine for 14 days for all individuals before undergoing elective surgery.
