Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Thursday made it clear that no blackbuck casualty has been reported amid severe flood in Ganjam district as the rare animals managed to cross the river and reach a nearby forest area safely after being swept away by strong currents.
An official statement referred to reports circulating about blackbucks being swept away by floodwaters following the severe deluge in southern Odisha.
The statement clarified that although some blackbucks were carried away by the strong currents, they managed to cross the river and reach the forest area.
Citing reports from the Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs) concerned, the government said no blackbuck death has been reported in the incident and all the animals were safe.
The clarification came amid concerns over the impact of flooding on wildlife in the region.
The authorities have not reported any blackbuck casualties in connection with the incident, the statement added.
It was earlier reported that rare blackbucks were at risk due to flood in Ganjam district with several reportedly swept away by strong currents at Badamadhapur and Kainchapur under Ganjam block, known habitats of the endangered antelope.
Rising water has inundated large stretches of their habitat leaving animals vulnerable and struggling against currents. Visuals from flood-hit areas show blackbucks battling floodwaters had sparked concern among locals and wildlife enthusiasts.
Forest officials visited affected areas to take stock and explore measures to protect the animals.
The deluge has also caused extensive damage to paddy and vegetable crops over thousands of acres of land.
