No Condolence Resolution Be Passed When I Die; Who Said It

New Delhi: V Maitreyan, the outgoing AIADMK Rajya Sabha member, on Wednesday left the entire House in silence when we requested that no condolence be passed or obituary references read out when he dies.

Maitreyan, broke down as he made his farewell speech, remembering his mentor the late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha for her trust in him.

He said that Rajya Sabha had betrayed the people of Tamil Nadu when more than a lakh Tamil speaking people were mercilessly slaughtered in Sri Lanka. The House, he said completely ignored the worst form of genocide, something which will ever remain a “thorn in his heart”.

“Whenever present and past members have passed away, we have observed silence as a mark of respect for them. But when in May 2009, more than 1.5 lakh brother and sisters from Tamil Elam were killed in Lanka, this House even did not take notice of it, leave alone pass a resolution, condolence or observing silence. That will ever remain as a thorn in my heart.

“Since this house did not bother to do the basic human courtesy, towards my brothers and sisters of Tamil Nadu, I urge, this house should not pass any condolence resolution or observe silence for me also whenever the situation arises,” he said.

Maitreyan, a doctor by profession, declared he will return to state politics to serve the people of Tamil Nadu.
