New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to direct state Boards to refund the exam fee collected from students for Class 10 and 12 exams, which had to be cancelled because of the COVID-19 second wave.
A two-member bench comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari rejected the petition on the ground that the issue does not “merit consideration,” LiveLaw reported.
The judges approved the stand adopted by state boards about their inability to refund the money which they spent for preparatory work and logistical arrangements to conduct the examination. A call to cancel the exams was taken at the eleventh hour, taking students’ health and safety into consideration, as coronavirus cases in the country kept increasing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the cancellation of CBSE class 12 exam on June 1 after a meeting with all stakeholders. Soon after, CISCE and other state boards followed suit.
