Bhubaneswar: Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi chaired a high-level review meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan on Tuesday to assess the progress of redevelopment projects of government medical colleges and hospitals across the state.
During the review, it was revealed that the redevelopment of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack is underway with an investment of Rs 4,474.49 crore. The work is to be completed by June 2026. Once the first phase is completed, the bed capacity will increase to 3,796. The chief minister has directed the institution to be developed into an AIIMS++ level facility, offering state-of-the-art healthcare.
The Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Cancer Institute and Hospital is also being redeveloped with an investment of Rs 895.89 crore in its first phase. After the second phase, the bed capacity will rise to 1,127.
The other major projects include redevelopment of the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Bura, at a cost of Rs 1,594 crore to increase its current bed strength from 1,485 to 2,861 with modern facilities.
The MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, is also undergoing redevelopment at a cost of Rs 1,014.13 crore to increase the number of beds from 1,583 to 2,033. A budget of Rs 627.16 crore has also been allotted to the Rourkela Government Hospital to increase bed strength from 437 to 763.
The Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar is also set for redevelopment at a cost of Rs 5,958 crore, expanding its bed capacity from 750 to 2,582.
According to an official, all these projects will include modern health infrastructure such as advanced healthcare services, academic buildings, hostels, patient attendants’ shelters, staff quarters, auditoriums, and sports facilities.
Health and family welfare minister Dr Mukesh Mahaling, chief secretary Manoj Ahuja, additional chief secretary to the chief minister Nikunj Bihari Dhal, health secretary and commissioner-cum-secretary Shalini Pandit, along with OBCC officials and senior engineers, were present during the meeting.
