Bhubaneswar: The National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) is carrying out feasibility studies at two locations in Odisha for a proposed 3,200 MW nuclear power project. The sites being examined are in Debagada and Nabarangpur districts.
Initially, the NTPC had identified four potential sites, but two were found unsuitable during preliminary assessments, according to Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy Department, Vishal Kumar Dev.
“They had applied for four sites. Out of these, two sites have not been found feasible. Studies are now being carried out in Debagada and Nabarangpur districts,” Dev said, while responding to media queries during an event in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.
Officials said nuclear energy has the potential to emerge as an important and economical source of power in the future, provided all safety measures are strictly followed.
The NTPC, in partnership with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), has proposed the establishment of a 3,200 MW nuclear power plant in Odisha. While feasibility studies are underway, preliminary assessments appear encouraging.
Stressing that public safety and environmental safeguards would be ensured while examining any nuclear power proposal, officials said the state is exploring cleaner energy sources to meet its growing power requirements.
Meanwhile, major private players have also approached the government with proposals to set up nuclear power projects in the state, signalling growing private-sector interest in India’s expanding nuclear energy sector.
