Odisha Governor Receives ‘Victory Flame’, Honours War Heroes

Bhubaneswar: Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal on Saturday received the Swarnim Vijay Mashaal (Victory Flame) commemorating 50 years of India’s victory in 1971 war with Pakistan.

Speaking at a function organised at Raj Bhavan, here, on the occasion, the Governor remembered the victory of the Indian Army in the war that led to creation of Bangladesh and surrender of the soldiers of the Pakistan Army.

Prof Lal also spoke on the role played by the Armed Forces personnel from Odisha who participated in the war. He honoured 154 war heroes of 1971 war with a memento and a shawl on the occasion.

Earlier, the Victory Flame was taken to the homes of war veterans MLO LN Sahu, Major General BK Mahanty, Col RC Patra and Lt Col Siboram Satpathy.

The Mashaal had reached Gopalpur Military Station from Raipur in Chhattisgarh on October 21 and then taken to INS Chilika on October 27. Indian Armed Forces is celebrating 2021 as ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’ nationwide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had handed over four Victory Flames to Indian Armed Forces at New Delhi on December 16 last year. These flames would travel to four corners of the country to display gratitude of the nation to the Indian Army veterans of the 1971 War.
