Odisha Govt Must Bear Cost For PET-CT Scan Of Cancer Patients, Rules HC

Cuttack: In a landmark ruling, the Orissa High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to bear the expenses towards PET-CT Scan of cancer patients from Wednesday.

The court passed the interim order while hearing a petition filed by a cancer patient.

The HC also expressed concern over the non-availability of a PET-CT Scan machine at Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre in the state.

Due to the non-availability of the PET-CT Scan machine, cancer patients in Odisha have to spend a lot of money for the test in other hospitals and private laboratories in other states.

What Is PET Scan?

PET (Positron Emission Tomography) is a functional imaging technique used to observe metabolic processes in a human body.

PET is documented as nuclear medicine. It is a visualizing test to diagnose the ailments of the body.

During the process, a dye is used which involves radioactive tracers. These tracers are vaccinated into the body through a vein in the arm. The tracer gets diluted in the body. With the help of the tracer, the doctors are able to get an idea if the internal body organs are working properly.
