Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a two-year extension for Ghanshyam Upadhyay, a 1999-batch Odisha-cadre IPS officer, as Joint Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The extension will run till June 29, 2028.
An order to this effect was issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on May 6.
Upadhyay currently heads the CBI’s Economic Offences (EO) Zone and is recognised for his expertise in tackling complex economic offences, anti-corruption cases, and financial fraud investigations. This move ensures continuity in the agency’s key operations, as the extension brings his total tenure in the CBI to seven years. He was initially appointed as Joint Director in November 2021 for a combined period of five years.
Prior to joining the CBI, Upadhyay served as Inspector General in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and held key positions in Odisha Police, including IG of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and IG of the Special Task Force (STF). He was promoted to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) in December 2023 while on central deputation.
His contributions to law enforcement have earned him several accolades, including the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service on Republic Day 2025 and the Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak.
