Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, several Jatra artists from Odisha were allegedly assaulted and detained in Bengaluru where they had been to present their performance.
As per sources, members of opera troupe ‘Surya Mandir’ had travelled to Bengaluru to stage a Jatra performance on Tuesday when the incident took place.
The Jatra troupe had been invited to Karnataka capital for a scheduled cultural programme. However, tension reportedly erupted over a dispute related to payment of performance fees. The situation took an ugly shape when verbal argument turned violent. It was alleged that the artists and crew were attacked while they were on stage.
It was alleged that unidentified persons stormed the venue and physically assaulted the performers and staff members in full public view. Some members of the troupe were also allegedly detained and prevented from leaving the premises.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from Odia cultural organisations and artists, who have demanded immediate intervention from the authorities. They have also sought strict action against the attackers and adequate compensation for the victims.
