Bhubaneswar: As southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala over a week ahead of its usual schedule, many parts of Odisha received pre-monsoon showers on Saturday.
As rainfall of varied intensity lashed many parts of Odisha during the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) described it as pre-monsoon showers today.
These showers can be seen as a precursor to the arrival of southwest monsoon which can be expected to arrive in the state in the next ten days.
The IMD made it clear that the recent spell of rain in Odisha is categorised as pre-monsoon shower and not related to Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) activity, as erroneously reported by section of the media.
IMD scientist Umasankar Das stated that some reports have incorrectly described the showers as kalbaisakhi events.
“The cloud systems responsible for the current rainfall are not moving in from the west or northwest, which is characteristic of Kalbaisakhi storms. Instead, these systems are advancing inland from the sea, a typical pre-monsoon pattern,” he said in a post on X.
