Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area is expected to develop over south Bay of Bengal area around May 5 and it may intensify into a depression.
This information was given by Director General of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Saturday.
As per a forecast made on Friday, a low pressure area is likely to develop over south Bay of Bengal around May 5. There is a possibility that the low pressure area may intensify into a depression, he said.
However, the low pressure is unlikely to affect Odisha. There will be no impact on Odisham while it may affect Andaman Islands, Mohapatra said.
On the likelihood of its further intensification into a cyclone, Mohapatra said it will be possible to get a clear picture only after the low pressure forms. A clear picture is expected to emerge around May 1.
Making it clear that no forecast about any cyclone has been made so far, the IMD DG appealed to the people not to panic.
Stating that IMD is keeping a close watch on the situation, he said accurate information will be shared only after low pressure area develops.
The conditions general remain conducive for formation of cyclone during May in the pre-monsoon season in the region.
