Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra conducted a surprise midnight inspection at several government-run shelter homes in Bhubaneswar to review living conditions and facilities provided to the inmates.
As per official sources, the Minister visited the shelter homes located at Ram Mandir, Kharvela Nagar, Master Canteen and Malisahi and interacted with the occupants and asked them about food and basic facilities being made available at these centres. He tried to find out whether the inmates are getting food on time.
During the visit, he reportedly expressed displeasure after noticing unhygienic surroundings, clogged passages, dirty toilets and poor maintenance at the shelter homes.
The Minister questioned officials on duty about the lack of cleanliness and asked why routine sanitation had not been carried out. How people can live in such conditions, the minister reportedly asked the staff, expressing strong displeasure.
Besides directing the officials to clean the premises immediately, Mahapatra asked them to ensure that food, sanitation, and safety requirements are strictly followed. The Minister also warned that he would make another visit to check whether the issues had been addressed.
The Minister stated that the government is planning to improve the shelter homes and increase their numbers to mitigate the plight of the distressed people.
