Malkangiri: Odisha Police have arrested a 20-year-old man from Chhattisgarh on charges of murdering his pregnant girlfriend and dumping her body inside a dense forest in Odisha.
The incident occurred several days ago and the remains of the victim was recovered from the forest near the Rengabandh village in Odisha’s Malkangiri on April 12.
The 25-year-old victim, a resident of the Murtunda village in the Sukma district in Chhattisgarh, was in a relationship with a youth named Umesh Nag of the nearby Pondum village, also in Chhattisgarh.
Recently, the victim became pregnant and Nag asked her to go in for an abortion at the Malkangiri district hospital. He reportedly accompanied her to the hospital, but doctors refused to carry out the procedure. The young woman then insisted that Nag marry her.
“Nag was clearly never interested in marrying the girl and he plotted the murder. He called her to a remote area near the Chalanguda village, close to the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border. He then smashed her head with a stone and dumped the body in the Sunatang forest area. When we recovered the body, it was decomposed and beyond recognition,” a senior police official said.
Initially, the police registered an unnatural death case. After an autopsy, the police registered a murder case and started investigations. Officials soon came to know of a missing case registered at a police station in nearby Chhattisgarh. The woman’s family identified the body from her clothes.
Further investigations led to Nag’s arrest. He was arrested in Chhattisgarh and brought to Odisha under transit remand.
