Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has revamped the evaluation system in schools under which students from Classes III to VIII in Odisha will now appear for four assessments in an academic year.
As part of the new system introduced by the School and Mass Education department, students will undergo two Formative Assessments (FA) and two Summative Assessments (SA) every year, replacing the existing evaluation pattern.
The department has issued detailed guidelines for immediate implementation across schools.
According to the revised assessment schedule, one Formative Assessment, and one Summative Assessment will be conducted between April and September, while the remaining two assessments will be held between October and March.
The first Formative Assessment (FA-1) is scheduled for July, during which students will appear for examinations worth 25 marks each in six subjects. This will be followed by the first Summative Assessment (SA-1), to be completed by September, carrying 50 marks per subject.
This apart, teachers will assess students for 25 marks based on classroom performance and continuous evaluation. Together, the assessment process will account for 100 marks per subject over the first six months, amounting to 600 marks across six subjects.
Similarly, during the second half of the academic year, students will appear for FA-2 and SA-2, accompanied by another 25-mark teacher assessment for each subject. Overall, students will be evaluated out of 1,200 marks in an academic year.
Apart from academic performance, the department has also introduced four annual assessments of students’ social and emotional development. These evaluations will be conducted through classroom observation and teacher-student interactions, with the findings recorded in students’ report cards.
Officials said the revised evaluation system aims to ensure continuous monitoring of students’ learning progress while placing greater emphasis on holistic development rather than relying solely on year-end examinations.
