Kataka: A data entry operator of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Kataka has been arrested in connection with alleged financial fraud to the tune of Rs 1.40 crore
Sources said the accused was arrested by Mangalabag police following a complaint lodged by the Superintendent of SCB Medical College and Hospital over alleged manipulation of salary-related data of employees.
The accused, who worked in the office of the Superintendent of the Medical College, was initially detained by the police for questioning before being placed under arrest.
Sources said data and work related to the salaries of employees at the medical college were being managed through the data entry operator. An audit report subsequently found alleged discrepancies and tampering in the salary-related data.
The audit findings indicated that the manipulation allegedly resulted in major financial irregularities. Following this, the SCB Superintendent approached Mangalabag police station and lodged a complaint.
Acting on the complaint, Mangalabag police launched an investigation into the matter and arrested the data entry operator in connection with the case.
A case has been registered under Section 316(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Preliminary investigation has revealed that 207 transactions were made to a single bank account in the last 10 years.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain how the financial irregularity took place, whether more people are involved, and where the siphoned money was spent, police sources said.
