Bhubaneswar: In a move towards sustainable urban transport, the Odisha government will soon introduce hydrogen-powered buses, making it a pioneer in eastern India for adopting this innovative, zero-emission technology.
The state has signed an MoU with a leading green energy company, a key step in Odisha’s green energy plan. The agreement will see three hydrogen buses start trial runs in Bhubaneswar in the coming weeks. “This is a crucial step towards a greener, cleaner Odisha. We are starting with three buses in Bhubaneswar as a pilot project. A dedicated depot will be constructed to support the operations,” Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra told reporters on Saturday.
Based on the trial outcomes, the service will gradually expand to other parts of the state, he added.
The introduction of hydrogen buses aligns with Bhubaneswar’s existing green public transport infrastructure, which already includes approximately 100 electric buses, including four double-decker e-buses operated by the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT).
