Nuapada: A female police constable was found hanging from a tree near a level crossing in Odisha’s Nuapada on Saturday evening.
The deceased constable has been identified as Rukmini Nag. She was deployed at Nuapada police station.
Hours before her body was discovered, she had reportedly sent a purported video message to several people, blaming her in-laws for her actions.
“We had a love marriage in 2023 and tied the knot in a temple, despite initial disapproval from our parents. After my husband’s family eventually agreed, we legalised our marriage in court. However, my husband’s mother, Malati Sabar, who didn’t live with us, constantly caused trouble. I endured the torment in silence, even during my pregnancy when they offered no support and only visited us to demand money. My mother-in-law has been asking me to leave the house and divorce her son. I don’t want to live because of the relentless torture,” Nag said in the video.
Nuapada police have recovered the body and sent it to district headquarters hospital here for autopsy. The sister of the deceased has lodged a complaint with police.
While her husband and his family members are yet to react to the allegations, police have begun an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to her death. “We have registered a case of abetment to suicide and analysing the video and other circumstances leading to the incident,” said a police officer.
