In case of mortality within 28 days of the incidence of stroke, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh reported highest 46 deaths per one lakh in a year, followed by Cachar in Assam with 39.9 deaths and Cuttack with 31 deaths.

The study ‘Stroke Incidence and Mortality: A Report of the Population’ was conducted by the National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR) in ICMR’s Bengaluru unit.

The study includes data of 2018-2019 from the network of five population-based stroke registries at Varanasi, Kota, Tirunelveli, Cuttack and Cachar under the National Stroke Registry Programme (NSRP).

SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Cachar of Assam, Tirunelveli Medical College in Tamil Nadu, Government Medical College in Kota of Rajasthan and Institute of Medical Sciences along with Banaras Hindu University (BHU) from Varanasi were part of the study.

The objective of the report is to provide comparable data on incidence of stroke in different regions of the country. It describes the burden and stroke mortality in these areas so as to provide baseline evidence for planning of stroke prevention and its control.

The study also revealed three major risk factors associated with stroke patients. In Cuttack, hypertension was the risk factor in case of 75% of cases while in Kota, it was lowest 40.3%.

Diabetes was found as a risk factor in Varanasi where it was associated with 35.1% cases while in Cachar, it was 15.9%.

The third major factor was tobacco. Cuttack had the maximum 62.4% of stroke patients with tobacco habits and Tirunelveli the least 23.1%.
