Odisha’s Sabita Toppo Bags Silver Medal In Asian Youth Athletics Championships

Bhubaneswar: 17-year-old Odisha athlete Sabita Toppo secured a silver medal in 100 metre hurdles at the 4th Asian Youth Athletics Championships in Kuwait on Friday. She won the medal by completing the race with a timing of 14.17s.

The event began on October 13 and will come to a close on October 16.

Toppo has been receiving training at Odisha’s Reliance Foundation Athletics HPC. She won gold in 100m hurdles at National Youth (U-18) Athletics meet that took place in Bhopal in September.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has congratulated the 17-year-old hurdler for her achievement. “Congratulate Odisha athlete, Sabita Toppo on clinching Silver medal in 100 mtr hurdles with a timing of 14.17s at the 4th Asian Youth Athletics Championships in Kuwait. May she continue to bring glory for the State & the nation. Wish her all the best for future endeavours,” he tweeted.

The Odisha Department of Sports and Youth Services has also congratulated Toppo for bagging the silver medal. “Congratulations Odisha hurdler, Sabita Toppo, an athlete of Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics HPC, on bagging a medal in 100mtr hurdles with a timing of 14.17s at the 4th Asian Youth Athletics Championships in Kuwait. We are proud of you.👏👏👏,” tweeted the department.

A 35-member squad is representing the Indian Youth Athletics team (U-18) at the event in Kuwait. This is the fourth edition of the competition.

It is pertinent to mention here that in the 2022 edition, Kuldeep Kumar won India’s first medal, a bronze in the boys’ pole vault. He cleared a personal best effort of 4.80m.

India’s first gold medal was won by Akash Yadav in the boys’ shot put with an effort of 19.37m.
