Orissa High Court Orders State Bar Council Election In 6 Weeks

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court on Tuesday directed the State Bar Council to conduct its election within 6 weeks.

Justice Arindam Sinha of the high court issued the order after hearing of a plea filed by former chairman of the Council, Chinmay Mohanty.

Mohanty, in his petition, had stated that the 5-year tenure of the Council had expired in 2018. But, fresh election of the Council has not been conducted, causing inconvenience for the lawyers.

The Council had filed a plea that the election could not be held as the final list of voters was not prepared as per the directives of the Bar Council of India (BCI).

The High Court dismissed the Council’s plea and directed to conduct the election on the basis of existing voters’ list.
