Koraput: In a major success against drug smuggling, police seized a huge quantity of cannabis being illegally transported from Buding forest in Odisha’s Koraput district to Rajasthan.
Swiftly acting on an intelligence input, a police team carried out a special operation and intercepted the consignment concealed within a truck masquerading as a plant saplings carrier, sources said.
After thorough inspection of the truck, the search team found cannabis weighing more than 1,000 kg valued at over Rs one crore. An official said that the estimated value of the consignment could be higher in other states in the country.
The driver of the truck has been taken into custody, while some others involved in the transport managed to escape from the spot. The driver is being interrogated by the police as part of the probe to gather information about the racket and involvement of others.
Investigation is underway to ascertain the exact nature of smuggling network, believed to be spread across several states. Efforts are on to apprehend all those involved in the racket.
