Cuttack: A couple reportedly committed suicide after their daughter married a man from a different caste in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Sunday.
The couple was identified as Nityananda Mohapatra and his wife Shantilata of Maniabandha village under Badamba block. They were found dead on bed by their neighbours in the morning.
Maniabandha Police reached the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem to Community Health Centre (CHC) at Badamba in the district.
“Investigation is on. A case of unnatural death has been registered. The bodies have been sent for autopsy following which the cause of death can be ascertained,” Kadamibini Parida, IIC, Maniabandha PS told media.
According to the villagers, Mohapatra’s neighbours found their doors unusually closed till late hours in the morning. Finding the main door unlocked from inside, they entered the house and found the couple sleeping on the bed. On checking them, they found the couple dead following which the police were informed.
“They were devastated after hearing that their daughter had eloped with a man outside their caste and married him. They must have committed suicide,” a neighbour told the media.
