Sambalpur: Amid power outage, chemotherapy for cancer patients at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla in Odisha’s Sambalpur district was conducted in darkness for around three hours.
As per information, doctors used in the cancer ward of the institute mobile phone torch lights during chemotherapy of the patients. Though generator was available for backup, it was allegedly not used during power outage, sources said.
It was claimed that the power cut took place for maintenance work and despite prior information, hospital authorities failed to take necessary measures to ensure an uninterrupted power supply for essential medical procedures.
Speaking on the incident, VIMSAR Superintendent Prof Lal Mohan Nayak said appropriate action would be taken for the lapse after a thorough probe. Those responsible for the incident would be held accountable, he said.
Expressing concern over the incident, attendants of the patients alleged that such power disruptions have taken place at the hospital in the past too.
