New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave on a three-nation tour on Sunday that will include his visit to Canada for the G7 Summit.
The PM will first land at Cyprus on Sunday, where he is expected to hold talks with the country’s president Nikos Christodoulides. On Monday, he will depart for Kananaskis in Canada for the G7 Summit. During the summit, the Prime Minister will present India’s stance on key global issues, including energy security, technology, and innovation, the Ministry of External Affairs has said.
The Canada visit is of particular significance as it marks Modi’s first first visit to Canada since diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Ottawa deteriorated over the Khalistani issue.
Modi’s detractors had claimed that he would not be invited to the Summit that he has been attending for the last five years, till the invitation from Canadian prime minister Mark Carney arrived.
The PM will conclude his tour with an official visit to Croatia on June 18. This tour is being considered important as it is Modi’s first foreign trip after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
The MEA has described India and Canada as “vibrant democracies”, and said how New Delhi believes the forthcoming meeting between the two prime ministers on the sidelines of the G7 Summit will offer an important opportunity to exchange views and “explore pathways” to reset bilateral ties.
India-Canada ties had hit an all-time low during the tenure of Justin Trudeau as prime minister of Canada, primarily over allegations that India had a hand in the assassination of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India had denied the allegations.
