PM Symbolises Trust In The House, Prez Droupadi Murmu On Inauguration Of New Parliament Building

New Delhi: Amid opposition boycott, President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday welcomed the inauguration of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying the office of the prime minister represents the “trust” in the House.

In her message, the President further said that inauguration of the new Parliament building is a matter of pride and joy for all the people of India and the event will be written in golden words in the country’s history.

She added that the new Parliament building, which is a guiding light for the country, “is an important milestone in our democratic journey”.

Her message was read out by Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new building amid a boycott by opposition parties. While 20 parties, including the Congress, decided to skip the event, insisting that the President should do the honours, Asasuddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) demanded Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla to inaugurate the structure.

The new Parliament building can comfortably seat 888 members in the Lok Sabha chamber and 300 in the Rajya Sabha chamber. For a joint sitting of both the houses, 1,280 MPs can be accommodated in the Lok Sabha chamber.
