Balangir: The police constable, who had allegedly assaulted his wife, injuring her critically, has been suspended from service in Odisha’s Balangir district.
The incident took place on December 8 evening, when constable Jyoti Pradhan and his wife Nupur Biswal of Samara village under Tusra police station in the district, were returning home on their bike.
The couple, both of whom work as constables in Reserve Police in Balangir town, were engaged in an argument over some issue as they approached the village.
Agitated by the words of Nupur, Jyoti parked the bike on roadside where one of his friends, identified as Jagannath Pradhan, was standing. As Jyoti told his friend about the issue, the latter pulled the hair of Nupur and beat her. He was joined by Jyoti in the assault.
As Nupur cried for help, some villagers working in nearby farm field rushed to the spot. On finding the villagers coming towards them, Jyoti and his friend managed to escape on the bike.
While Nupur is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Bolangir, police have apprehended Jagannath. Jyoti is still absconding.
Meanwhile, Balangir SP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo has issued the suspension order to Jyoti after investigation.
