Prevent Migrants From Walking Home, Centre Tells States

New Delhi: The Central Government has asked the states to prevent movement of migrant workers on roads and railway tracks and facilitate their transport on buses or Shramik special trains.

Reiterating the Centre’s stand on migrant workers, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said the States and Union Territories had been advised in a letter on May 11 that if the migrant labourers are found walking on roads or train tracks, they should be counselled and provided shelter and food beforte sending them to their native places in Shramik trains or special buses.

Regretting that the labourers are still found covering long distance on foot to go to their home states, Bhalla advised the states to disseminate the information on special facilities made by the Government for the helpless migrants in this regard.

The Union Secretary said the Ministry of Railways is running more than 100 Shramik special trains to help the migrants return home and will allow more trains if needed.
