Berhampur: Kodala sub-jail premises in Odisha’s Ganjam district wore a festive look on Sunday for the wedding ceremony of an under-trial prisoner accused of rape with the complainant.
A resident of Gochhabadi under Polasara police station limits, Surya Kant Behera, lodged in the jail since November 2024, tied the nuptial knot with his 22-year-old lover, who had earlier file a rape complaint against him following a misunderstanding between their families.
Before his arrest, he was working in Surat, Gujarat.
Later, both families resolved their differences and the couple decided to formalise their relationship through marriage.
According to sources, Surya arrived in a decorated electric vehicle arranged by the jail authorities to the ceremony, which was held as per traditional vedic rituals in presence of members of both the families, after necessary permission from the court and prison authorities.
But unlike most ceremonies, the groom returned to custody, and the bride went home.
The groom’s father, Bhaskar Behera, expressed hope for his son’s release and a happy married life for the couple.
