Mumbai: Kriti Sanon’s Raksha Bandhan advertisement controversy has now pulled Priyanka Chopra into the conversation, despite the global star making no public comments on the issue.
Priyanka is being dragged into the row after her mother, Madhu Chopra, weighed in on Kriti’s outfit and stressed the importance of maintaining “boundaries”.
Kriti featured in a Raksha Bandhan jewellery campaign for GIVA, where she celebrated the festival with her on-screen brother and pet dog. She wore an ivory Indo-Western ensemble featuring a bralette-style blouse, cape and draped skirt.
The campaign drew criticism online, with some users questioning Kriti’s outfit and the inclusion of her pet in the Rakhi celebrations.
At a Mumbai event, Madhu said she supports the idea of “my body, my choice” but believes it should come with boundaries, dignity and respect for others’ values.
Addressing the controversy over Kriti’s outfit, she said such clothing may be acceptable in places where it is considered normal, but added, “Par yeh yahan normal nahi hai.”
“My body, my choice is right, but woh daayra zaruri hai. Dignity, respecting other people’s values is important. Ab yeh cheezein aisi jagah kar sakte hai jahan par yeh normal hai. Par yeh yahan normal nahi hai. Sorry to say that,” she said.
Madhu also referred to her own children, noting that Priyanka and her siblings wear similar outfits for work and personal preference.
However, she stressed that clothing should suit the occasion and said criticism is inevitable when the styling does not fit the setting.
“My kids also wear such clothes, for work and because they like wearing them, but I also feel they need to look good aesthetically as per the occasion. If it’s not looking aesthetic, it will draw criticism,” she said.
Her remarks soon brought Priyanka into the debate. Social media users highlighted the actor’s history of wearing bold outfits at international events and public appearances, questioning Madhu’s comments about “boundaries”.
Amid the backlash, old photos and videos of Priyanka also resurfaced online. One vacation picture featuring Priyanka, Nick Jonas and Madhu, in which they are seen smoking cigars, particularly caught netizens’ attention.
The picture prompted some social media users to question Madhu’s comments on Kriti’s advertisement and point to what they perceived as a contradiction in her stance.
