Procurement Issue: Unable To Sell Produce, Farmer Attempts Suicide In Odisha’s Nuapada

Bhubaneswar/Nuapada: Even as the opposition parties stalled the proceedings in the Assembly over paddy procurement issue, a farmer allegedly attempted to commit suicide as he was unable to sell his produce in Nuapada district on Friday.

According to sources, the farmer, identified as Romachan Dandasena of Bhangiamunda in Sinapali block, was mentally disturbed as his produce was lying unsold since the token issued to him had expired.

Due to non-payment of power bill, his electricity connection was also disconnected. As a result, his farmland did not get water from the lift irrigation project and the crops were damaged, alleged the family members of the farmer.

After harvest, he had taken 84 packets of paddy to the mandi for sale. The mandi authorities took bribe from him with an assurance to procure paddy. But they did not purchase the produce as the validity of the token had expired on February 17, alleged his family.

Frustrated by being unable to sell his crop, Romachan consumed poison at his farmland. He has been admitted to Khadial hospital and his condition was stated to be critical.
