Guwahati: Rahul Gandhi will be arrested after the Lok Sabha elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed on Wednesday.
Assam Police has filed an FIR against the Congress MP, who is heading the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ that is presently passing through the BJP-ruled north-eastern state. The charge against Rahul is that he allegedly instigated “wanton acts of violence” in Assam.
“We have filed an FIR. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) will conduct the investigation and he (Rahul) will be arrested after the Lok Sabha elections,” Biswa Sarma said on the sidelines of a programme at Nazira in Sibsagar district.
Assam Police took suo moto cognizance of alleged violence during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra and registered an FIR against several Congress leaders, including Rahul, who face charges of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, assault or criminal force to deter public servants from discharging their duty, damaging public property under IPC.
According to Assam’s Director General of Police (DIG) GP Singh, the case has been transferred to the state CID.
Biswa Sarma had said Rahul allegedly instigated the crowd to break barricades and enter Guwahati on Tuesday. A number of Congress leaders and workers, and four police personnel sustained minor injuries.
Rahul dared the Assam government to file as many cases as it wants.
“I don’t know how Himanta Biswa Sarma got the idea that he can intimidate me by filing cases… File 25 more cases. BJP-RSS can’t intimidate me,” the Congress leader said.
