Mumbai: Ranbir Kapoor and Yash-starrer Ramayana has opened to a strong response at the box office, recording impressive collections on its first day.
The film had reportedly earned ₹32 crore by afternoon, surpassing the opening-day collection of Dhurandhar and setting the stage for a potentially record-breaking theatrical run.
The film’s advance bookings had already indicated a promising opening, with favourable audience reactions further boosting its box-office prospects.
Ticket sales opened on Dussehra, 15 days ahead of the theatrical release.
However, pre-sales gained momentum only after a disagreement between exhibitors and distributors was resolved last week, allowing bookings to proceed in full swing.
The film had generated an impressive ₹200 crore in worldwide advance bookings before its release.
Of this, over ₹120 crore came from India, with opening-day advance sales alone contributing ₹45 crore in gross collections.
Ramayana is witnessing packed shows across several parts of India, with even Thursday morning screenings reporting houseful occupancy.
Although its advance bookings fell short of the massive numbers recorded by Dhurandhar 2 earlier this year, the film has maintained a strong momentum at the box office.
By 4 pm on its release day, the Ranbir Kapoor and Yash-starrer had collected ₹32.81 crore net in India.
The Hindi version has emerged as the biggest contributor so far. Interestingly, despite Yash playing Ravana, the Kannada version has registered a relatively slow start, contributing just ₹3.91 crore to the overall collections.
Among the other language versions, Telugu has performed well, while Tamil and Malayalam have contributed relatively modest numbers.
By afternoon, Ramayana had already surpassed the opening-day collection of Dhurandhar, which had earned ₹28 crore on its first day last year.
With strong advance bookings and impressive audience turnout, the film was expected to cross the ₹70 crore net mark in India on its opening day.
At these projected figures, Ramayana is poised to surpass the opening-day collections of several major blockbusters, including Pathaan (₹57 crore), Animal (₹63 crore) and Drishyam 2 (₹62 crore). It could also overtake Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, which opened at ₹75 crore.
However, the bigger challenge will be surpassing the all-time opening-day record held by Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar 2, which collected ₹102 crore on its first day earlier this year.
Backed by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in association with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, Ramayana is being planned as a two-part cinematic saga.
The film features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman.
The first instalment released worldwide on November 5, 2026, while the second part is scheduled to arrive during Diwali 2028.
