Dhaka: Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina reiterated that there was no change in her decision to return to her country by December. Hasina revealed this in an interview to AP. According to the AP report, Hasina also said she would not need the support of any other country, be it US or India, for her return to Bangladesh. She claimed that she was not seeking any protection from the foreign countries.
“I value friendship and cooperation with all nations. That has always been our (Bangladesh’s) foreign policy. But I do not need the blessing of a foreign power to return to my own country,” Hasina told AP.
Hasina fled Bangladesh in August 2024 after a student-led uprising ousted her. According to reports, she had been living in India ever since. “I will return to Bangladesh. That decision has not changed,” she told the news Agency.
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in absentia in November 2025 for crimes against humanity over the crackdown on student-led protests in 2024. About 1,400 people were killed during the violence, as per the United Nations. Hasina has denied wrongdoing. She has rejected the verdict.
Bangladesh has repeatedly sought her extradition. India has not handed her over.
