Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police tracked down and arrested a 25-year-old rape accused in Bengaluru, just days after he escaped from police custody in the Odisha capital.
The fugitive, identified as Rudra Prasad Sutar, a resident of Sabarang under Bhadrak district, was brought back to Bhubaneswar by train on Frinday and produced before a local court here.
Sutar was arrested on July 30 in connection with allegations of rape on the false promise of marriage. He was picked up from Bhadrak and brought to Mahila police station in Bhubaneswar for legal formalities prior to his scheduled court appearance. On the morning of July 31, while in custody, Sutar managed to flee when ASI Tilottama Prusty, who was serving as the Duty Constable Officer (DCO), briefly stepped away to use the washroom while the sentry on duty was serving breakfast to him.
Following which, Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena ordered a preliminary inquiry that established negligence and dereliction of duty. Both the sentry and ASI Tilottama Prusty were placed under suspension while special teams conducted searches across Bhadrak and Bhubaneswar, examining CCTV footage and setting up checkpoints.
Police later traced Sutar’s movements through CCTV feeds along potential escape routes to Bhubaneswar railway station, where he boarded a long-distance train bound for Karnataka. A dedicated Commissionerate Police team pursued the lead to Bengaluru, located the accused and took him into custody. After being produced before a local court in Bengaluru to obtain necessary permissions, Sutar was brought back to Bhubaneswar by train this morning.
