Berhampur: A 16-year-old girl attempted suicide after allegedly being raped by her father in Digapahandi area of Odisha’s Ganjam district.
The accused, Bhima Pradhan (43), was arrested by Digapahandi police on Sunday. The girl, who consumed around 10 sleeping pills, is receiving treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.
According to police, the accused, a daily labourer, was a habitual drinker. He had recently returned home after working out of state. On June 11, while the mother was at work and her other children were outside, Bhima raped her after consuming alcohol. He also threatened to kill her and her mother if she revealed the crime to anyone.
Later, the mother found the girl unconscious and rushed her to Digapahandi hospital. She was shifted to MKCG MCH as her condition worsened.
On June 13, the girl, partially recovered, shared her ordeal, leading to the complaint. “We have registered a case against the accused under different sections of the BNS and Pocso Act. Medical test of the accused was conducted,” a police officer said.
