Kolkata: A law student was allegedly gangraped in Kolkata after she turned down a marriage proposal from the main accused, Manojit Mishra, as she was already in a committed relationship.
The 24-year-old student of South Calcutta Law College stated in her detailed complaint, a copy of which has been accessed by India Today, that three men gangraped her even after she pleaded with the main accused and touched his feet.
The 31-year-old Mishra, a former student of the college and current general secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), assaulted the woman with the help of first-year student Zaib Ahmed and another student Pramit Mukherjee.
The woman alleged that the accused threatened to harm her boyfriend and implicate her parents in false cases.
After those threats didn’t work, “they tried to force me with the intention of having sex,” the woman said in her complaint.
“I denied them and fought back by not letting him do anything and pushing him back. I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But they did not agree.”
She fell at Mishra’s feet, begging him to let her go.
“I touched his feet but he didn’t let me go… They again took me to the room… they took me to the guard room forcefully, undressed me and started forcefully raping me,” she recounted the harrowing experience.
Despite experiencing a panic attack and shortness of breath, the law student got no help.
“I asked them to take me to hospital but they were not helping me. They had locked the main gate of the college and the guard was helpless and did not help.”
Horror recounted and filmed
The assault was filmed and she was blackmailed into silence. “They recorded videos of mine when the accused was raping me. They threatened me to show these videos to everyone if I do not cooperate.”
When she tried to leave, they attempted to hit her with a hockey stick.
“I need justice,” she wrote.
The victim claimed she was eventually allowed to leave the premises later that evening only after being threatened of further harm.
The law student also alleged that she was asked to prove her loyalty to the Trinamool Congress’ student wing. Before being gangraped, she and seven others were called to the union room in the college campus where Mishra spoke about his personal life and his power.
Pramit, one of the other accused, later called her outside and asked her about her loyalty towards Mishra and the unit.
“I promised him to provide my loyalty towards him and the team as I was appointed as the girls’ secretary. So I gave him the faith of my support towards the unit,” she said.
On re-entering the union room, Manojit asked hewhether Pramit hr ad explained everything.
“I said, ‘Yes Dada, I will always be in the unit. Don’t worry’,” she stated.
