Kolkata: Three persons have been arrested for the alleged gangrape of a law student in the guard room inside her college campus in South Kolkata.
Kasba police have identified the accused as Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay.
While the law student was allegedly raped on between 7.30 pm and 8.50 pm on Wednesday, the arrests were carried out on Thursday night. The accused include two students and one former student.
Investigations revealed that Monojit committed the assault, while the two others stood guard. His social media account states that he was former president of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad popularly known as TMCP in the college. He is currently working as a criminal lawyer in the Alipore court.
He, however, was a regular visitor to the campus. “The main accused had called the victim to the campus on Wednesday evening. On her arrival, the main accused and his accomplices took her to a room where she was raped,” The Telegraph reported, quoting a police officer.
It further stated that Mohit was working at the college as a temporary staff for the last six-seven months on the recommendations of the governing body headed by Trinamool MLA Ashok Deb. “His employment is renewed every 45 days,” said the vice-principal of the college.
The other two accused, who are students of the college, were first arrested from a park near Talbagan crossing after the complaint was filed. Their interrogation then led to the arrest of the main accused. Mobile phones of all the three have been seized and sent for forensic examination, it added.
Meanwhile taking suo moto cognizance of the incident, National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, expressing deep concern and directing immediate, time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of BNS. It also stressed the need to extend full medical, psychological, and legal assistance to the victim, along with compensation under Section 396 of BNSS. The Commission has sought a detailed action-taken report within 3 days.
