Bhubaneswar: Kesinga railway station in Odisha’s Kalahandi district has undergone a comprehensive redevelopment, emerging as a modern, passenger-friendly facility under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
The station was redeveloped at a cost of approximately ₹22 crore, significantly enhancing infrastructure and amenities while strengthening its position as a key rail hub for western Odisha.
Key improvements include modernisation of the main station building, construction of a new second entry for better passenger flow, and a 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge fitted with three lifts to ensure barrier-free access. Platforms have been upgraded with better surfaces and shelters, while approach roads have been widened, pedestrian pathways developed, and a modern drainage system installed. Passenger facilities have also seen substantial enhancement, including upgraded toilets, a retiring room, and dormitory accommodations.
Designed with a strong focus on inclusivity, the station now better serves senior citizens, persons with disabilities (Divyangjan), and families through improved circulation spaces, enhanced accessibility features, and thoughtfully designed public areas that promote safer and smoother movement.
Originally established in 1931, Kesinga station lies on the Raipur–Vizianagaram line of the East Coast Railway. For decades, it has served as a vital link connecting Kalahandi to major cities in Odisha and neighbouring states, supporting passenger movement, trade, and the region’s overall socio-economic progress.
Officials expect the upgraded station to boost regional connectivity and align with the growing needs of local residents, students, farmers, traders, and tourists. The improvements are anticipated to facilitate easier travel and stimulate activity in Kalahandi’s agriculture, business, and tourism sectors.
The newly modernised Kesinga station is expected to serve as an impressive gateway to the region known for its rich tribal heritage, vibrant cultural traditions, and skilled artisans. The area is famous for the energetic Ghumura dance as well as its distinctive handloom products, handicrafts, and colourful festivals.
Kesinga is one of 57 stations in Odisha being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. It is among the stations slated to be dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister. The project underscores Indian Railways’ and East Coast Railway’s ongoing efforts to create modern, inclusive, and sustainable stations that prioritise passenger comfort, universal accessibility, and operational efficiency while supporting broader regional development.
