Bhubaneswar: DCP Umashankar Dash on Monday informed that the Rs 30 lakh cash seized from a youth at Khandagiri here on November 20 was linked to fake gutka business in Cuttack’s Jagatpur and Tangi areas.
Earlier in the day, a fake tobacco-manufacturing unit was busted and gutkha worth lakh of rupees seized during a raid in Jagatpur area.
“Suspecting that the cash seized were proceeds from fake gutka business, Khandagiri Police contacted Jagatpur Police and Tangi Police, which informed that two cases have been registered in their respective police limits,” the DCP said.
He further informed that Cuttack UPD will investigate the matter.
Khandagiri police had earlier forwarded the case to the Income Tax Department.
Notably, Khandagiri police detained a youth, carrying Rs 30 lakh in a sack, near Tapoban petrol pump here when he tried to run away on seeing a PCR van. He was taken into custody as he failed to give any valid reason for carrying cash in such a huge quantity.
Another youth Pralaya Kumar Padhee reached the Khandagiri police station and claimed that Mahavir was a friend and the money belonged to him. He told the police that he was a paan masala trader and he had sent Mahavir to collect pending payments from vendors at Paralakhemundi in Gajapati district.
