Mumbai: Like every year, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s family celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi in grand style.
Speaking about his family’s mixed tradition and religious practices, Salman’s father Salim Khan revealed that they don’t consume beef.
Sharing insights on Prophet Mohammed’s teachings and the reason for not eating beef, Salim told Free Press Journal, “From Indore until today, we have never had beef. Beef is eaten by most Muslims as it is the cheapest meat. Some even buy it to feed their pet dogs. But in the teachings of Prophet Mohammed, he has clearly stated that a cow’s milk is a substitute for a mother’s milk and it is a mufid (beneficial) cheez. He has stated that cows should not be killed and that beef is forbidden.”
The veteran writer added, “Prophet Mohammed adopted good practices from every religion. For example, eating only halal meat was adopted from the Jews, who call it kosher. He stated that every religion is good and that each one believes in a Supreme Power, just as we do.”
Recalling how he grew up among Hindus and how Hindu traditions were woven into his childhood, the octogenarian shared that his family never objected his marriage to Salma (Sushila Charak).
Salim and Salma got married in 1964, and are parents to Salman, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan, Alvira Khan. The couple later adopted Arpita Khan.
In 1981, Salim married Bollywood actor Helen.
On the work front, Salman is currently hosting the reality show ‘Bigg Boss 19.’
He will next appear in Apoorva Lakhia’s war drama ‘Battle of Galwan, based on the 2020 Galwan Valley conflict between India and China.
