Bhubaneswar: Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) Deemed to be University felicitated Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of India Meteorological Department (IMD), on being recently conferred with the prestigious United Nations (UN) Sasakawa Award for his contribution in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction.
SOA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda felicitated Dr Mohapatra on Tuesday, in the presence of senior professors and researchers.
Among those present were Prof. Uma Charan Mohanty, Professor Emeritus, SOA; Manorama Mohanty, Director, IMD, Bhubaneswar; Prof. Manas Kumar Mallick, Director, Institute of Technical Education and Research; Prof. Santosh Kumar Rout, Dean, Institute of Agricultural Sciences; Prof. Prasanta Panigrahi, Director, Centre for Quantum Science and Technology; Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, Director, Centre for Environment and Climate; and Prof. Renu Sharma, Additional Dean (Student Affairs), ITER.
On Saturday, Dr Mohapatra was felicitated here by the Bhubaneswar chapter of Indian Meteorological Society (IMS) and Science for Common People Society (SCOPES).
Prof. Uma Charan Mohanty, who president of SCOPES, said that the organisation – which is promoted by SOA — aims to bring science from ‘Lab to Land’.
Dr Mohapatra said such an organisation was the need of the hour to propagate scientific knowledge among the common masses while preparing a climate-resilient community.
Prof. Mohanty said the UN honour conferred on Dr Mohapatra not only recognised his insightful leadership but also reaffirmed India’s growing role in advancing global disaster risk management.
Dr Mithun Karmakar of NHM-Odisha, Ajay Kumar Mahakud of SCOPES and R.K. Mohapatra of IMS were also present.
