Mumbai: ‘Dabangg’ actress Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal’s inter-religion marriage was apparently not well received by her parents.
There has been speculation that the actress’ family has still not accepted Zaheer as their son-in-law wholeheartedly.
Sonakshi’s mother Poonam Sinha’s recent comments about Zaheer and Sonakshi’s relationship on ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ has only added fuel to such talks.
Poonam, who was a guest on Kapil’s celebrity talk show along with husband Shatrughan Sinha, Sonakshi and Zaheer, took a subtle dig at her son-in-law.
“Meri mummy ne kaha tha ki hamesha ussi se shaadi karna jo tumko zyada pyaar kare. Voh toh maine sunn liya, kar bhi liya. Lekin meri beti ne kya kiya? Usne usse shaadi ki jisko yeh zyada pyaar karti hai. (My mother used to say we should marry someone who loves us more. I did follow my mother’s advice, but my daughter married someone whom she loves more,” Poonam quipped.
Poonam’s comment on national television left Zaheer embarrassed.
Sonakshi sensed the awkwardness and immediately intervened, “Voh thoda debatable hai. Usko (Zaheer) lagta hai voh mujhse zyada pyaar karta hai. Mujhe lagta hai main usse zyada pyaar karti hoon. Ab settle kaun karega yeh maamla?” (This is a debatable topic. He thinks he loves me more. I think I love him more. Now, who is going to settle this matter between us?”
Soon, the video clip from the show went viral, netizens lauded Sonakshi for her smart reply.
One user wrote, “Oh god, that was actually so sad and awkward to watch. They thought her statement was heading in a completely different direction and celebrated a little too early. You can see he was a bit hurt by where that went.”
Another person posted, “Sona handled it really well. You could see she sensed that he felt bad about it.”
“The way Sonakshi handled it is really impressive. But I really felt bad for that guy,” wrote another.
One comment read, “The whole episode was awkward to watch.”
During the episode, Archana Puran Singh asked Poonam about her marriage to Shatrughan and who had proposed first.
“Inhone karvaya propose mujhse (She made me do it),” Shatrughan replied.
Sharing the story behind her marriage to Shatrughan, Poonam said, “His elder brother came to my house to talk to my mother. She said, ‘Not at all, we don’t want any boy from the film fraternity’.”
Shatrughan added the humorous side of the story. “She told my brother, ‘Have you seen your brother? Yeh bihari, gali ka gunda, aur humaari beti doodh ki dhuli hui, itni sundar, gori, aur Miss India’,” the veteran actor and politician said.
“If you make us stand together and take a colour photo, it would look black and white,” he added. Shatrughan and Poonam tied the knot in 1980.
Sonakshi and Zaheer dated each other for years before becoming man and wife on June 23 in a private ceremony, held at Sonakshi’s Mumbai residence.
The registry marriage was followed by a star-studded reception, which was graced by Bollywood celebrities like Salman Khan, Huma Qureshi, Rekha, and Kajol.
