New Delhi: The Supreme Court, on Friday, granted interim bail to comedian Munawar Faruqui in case lodged at Indore in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
A bench of the apex court, headed by Justice R F Nariman, also issued notice to Madhya Pradesh government on Faruqui’s plea challenging the high court order with regard to denial of bail to him in case of hurting religious sentiments..
In the proceedings, conducted through video conferencing, the bench also stayed the production warrant issued against Faruqui in a separate case lodged in Uttar Pradesh over the issue of hurting religious sentiments.
A Mumbai-based stand-up comedian had alleged in his petition that the police did not follow the procedure for arrest as laid down by the top court in its 2014 decision in Arnesh Kumar vs the State of Bihar. As per this decision, the arrest should be preceded by initial investigations by the police officer to assess the genuineness of the complaint.
