Mumbai: Tabu, who is currently riding high on the success of her recent release ‘Bhooth Bangla’, in a recent interview, opened up about ageism and the challenges women continue to face in the film industry.
In a conversation with Harper’s Bazaar India, Tabu spoke about the constant scrutiny women in films are subjected to, pointing out that society tends to be far more preoccupied with a woman’s age than women are themselves.
Her remarks shed light on the deep-rooted biases and double standards that still persist in the entertainment industry.
“People are more worried about your age than you are yourself. They want to show you the mirror, as though you don’t have one at home,” the actress was quoted as saying by the portal.
She further shared that ageing is often misunderstood as a dramatic change, when in reality it is a slow and continuous process that happens over time.
According to her, people do not suddenly grow old overnight, but evolve gradually with each passing day.
She added, “The person answering that question hasn’t aged overnight. We experience it every single day. It’s not like one day someone wakes up at 20 and next day they turn 45.”
Tabu also revealed that she was often advised not to be too blunt while rejecting film offers.
The actress shared that within the industry, actors are generally expected to avoid openly criticising a script and instead use reasons such as scheduling conflicts or “date issues” as a more diplomatic way to turn down projects.
She continued, “You should not give a real reason for not doing a film. Give the excuse of dates and walk away. I didn’t understand that. If I don’t like the script, I don’t like it. And I said so.”
On the work front, Tabu will be next seen in ‘King100’ alongside Nagarjuna Akkineni.
