Mumbai: It is not unbelievable that electric vehicles (EV) are the future. Tata Motors, which has launched two proper EVs in India, is expecting 25 per cent of its total car sales to come from EVs in just 5 years time.
The homegrown brand has sold over 6,000 Nexon EVs since its launch in January 2020 while the demand has boosted recently. Shailesh Chandra, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit of Tata Motors, told Autocar India that the numbers have risen from 300 bookings a month to over 2,000 a month now.
The demand has touched similar levels for the diesel variant.
Rising fuel prices, subsidies and reducing battery prices are key drivers, according to Chandra. He also pointed out that prices of petrol-diesel vehicles will increase owing to emission norms.
The starting price for Tata Nexon Electric is Rs 13.99 lakh and that of the recently launched Tata Tigor EV is Rs 11.99 lakh. Both cars have a 300+ km range (ARAI).
