Bhubaneswar: In alignment with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s (MNRE) nationwide “Month of Solar” initiative under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Odisha DISCOMs have launched a comprehensive state-wide consumer awareness and outreach campaign titled “Mo Chhata, Mo Sanchaya” (My Roof, My Savings).

The campaign is designed to create widespread consumer awareness about the benefits of solar energy, encourage rooftop solar applications, and expedite installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Through the initiative, Tata Power-led Odisha DISCOMs are reaching out to consumers across all districts and customer segments to ensure that maximum citizens are able to avail the benefits of rooftop solar and related government subsidies.

Today, Odisha is among the leading states in rooftop solar adoption. The state currently offers one of the most attractive rooftop solar subsidy structures in the country under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana for both up to 1 Kw (ULA) and above 1 kW (non-ULA) consumer categories.

Eligible consumers can avail combined Central and State Government subsidies of up to Rs 1,38,000 for rooftop solar installations, significantly reducing upfront costs and making clean energy adoption increasingly affordable and accessible for households across urban and rural areas.

The state’s strong performance reflects sustained efforts to maximise rooftop solar installations during the high solar irradiance summer months.

The “Mo Chhata, Mo Sanchaya” campaign has been conceptualised as a people-centric awareness movement focused on making rooftop solar simple, accessible, and beneficial for every household. The initiative highlights how consumers can convert unused rooftop spaces into a long-term source of savings through reduced electricity bills while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

As part of the campaign, Tata Power-led Odisha DISCOMs are undertaking extensive grassroots awareness and outreach activities across the state. Surya Ghar Gram Sabhas are being organised at the Gram Panchayat level to educate citizens about rooftop solar adoption, subsidy benefits, installation procedures, and long-term savings opportunities.

The discoms are also engaging with sarpanches, block-level officers, local community representatives, and citizens across urban and rural areas to encourage greater participation in the scheme and facilitate seamless consumer onboarding

To maximise outreach and public participation, the campaign is being amplified through multiple communication platforms, including newspaper advertisements in regional and local publications, FM radio awareness campaigns, sustained social media and digital engagement, community-level awareness meetings, local activations, and consumer engagement drives across districts.

The awareness and outreach initiatives are being implemented in accordance with the Information, Education and Communication (IEC) guidelines of the Government of Odisha and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Through “Mo Chhata, Mo Sanchaya,” Tata Power-led Odisha DISCOMs aim to further strengthen Odisha’s leadership in rooftop solar adoption and transform rooftop solar into a large-scale citizen movement supporting India’s renewable energy and sustainability goals.

According to the PM Surya Ghar national portal, Odisha ranks No. 1 among Category C (Medium Consumer Base) states in rooftop solar installations during the MNRE’s “Month of Solar” initiative for the duration May 1–14. At the national level, Odisha is also among the top 10 states in rooftop solar installations, with a total of 89,614 installations recorded as of May 18, 2025.
