Teachers Return Money Taken For Issuing Matric Certificates In Odisha’s Jajpur

Jajpur: A day after the news about a high school in Odisha’s Jajpur collecting money from students for issuing Matriculation certificate was highlighted, the teachers returned the amount on Sunday.

According to sources, the teachers and employees of Panchayat High School at Salijanga under Danagadi block visited the houses of the students who had paid Rs 200 for being issued the Matric certificates.

The school staff including women were found going house to house of the students amid heavy rain to return the money. They also collected the signatures of the students confirming that the amount had been returned.

It may be noted that a video on the school officials taking money had gone viral in social media. In the video, an assistant teacher was seen taking Rs 200 to issue the Matric certificate.

The headmaster could be heard saying, “No money, no certificate. If you want to avail certificates, submit Rs 200.” When asked by some parents, he had said the money was meant for development of the school.

But the district education officer said it was illegal on the part of school authorities to take money for issuing Matric certificate as there is no government provision for it. “We would look into the allegation and if anybody would be found involved in the unlawful act, would face official action,” he added.
